Alejandro Arauz (Nicaragua) 

Alejandro Arauz is a Nicaraguan interdisciplinary visual artist, scholar, educator, and curator based in Toronto. Alejandro holds a bachelor in fine arts in visual arts specializing in drawing and painting from the University of Windsor in Windsor, Ontario. Arauz also finished a master of fine arts in studio arts, specializing in printmaking, from Lousiana State University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He has been the recipient of many awards and grants including Experiential Project Learning Funds and the Fund for Scholarly Research and Creative Work, both by Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario. Alejandro is the undergraduate chair of the visual art program and a lecturer at Queen’s University. He is also on the board of directors of the Latin American Canadian Art Projects in Toronto. Arauz’s studio work is focused on exploring performance and video combined with manual and digital techniques of printmaking. His work reflects on recurrent notions of identity, diaspora, memory, and belonging from the artist’s self as a Nicaraguan in Canada. Alejandro’s work has been showcased in the solo exhibition Choir Chant (2017) at WKP Kennedy Gallery in North Bay, Ontario, and MFA thesis Creatures del Monte (2008) at Alfred C. Glassell Gallery in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. His work has also been part of the collective exhibitions Mid-America Print Council Exhibition (2020) at the Center of Visual Arts Gallery at Kent State University in Ohio and Come Together (2016) at Propeller Gallery in Toronto.
