Biography 

Alejandro Andreu Reyes (Cuba) 

Alejandro Andreu Reyes is a Cuban multidisciplinary visual artist and production designer currently based in Toronto, Canada. In 2005 Reyes completed studies in analog and digital photography at the Marti Studies Center in Cuba, and in 2012 Reyes completed a bachelor of arts in stage design at the University of Art of Cuba (Instituto Superior de Arte). Additionally, in 2002, Reyes finished credited courses in restoration and conservation (technician) from the Cabinet of Art Restoration Office of the City Historian in Cuba. Reyes has an extensive career as a production designer, set designer, and costume designer beginning in Cuba while working with theatre companies and film and TV productions. Later on, after immigrating to Canada, Reyes continued exhibiting and working in the TV and film production industry. In 2018, Reyes founded The Artist & The Viewer: Toronto Art Newspaper, a platform dedicated to the visual art scene in Toronto, which ceased work during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. 

Reyes’s visual work explores portraits of real people and fictional characters from his memory and the collective imagination of Cuba – where Reyes lived under an autocratic regime – recontextualized with new experiences in Canada. His work has been in the collective exhibitions Power (2015) and Color and Light (2013), both at Arta Gallery in Toronto.
