Biography 

Laura Barrón (born 1966, Mexico) 

Laura Barrón is a Mexican video artist and educator based between Toronto and Mexico. She holds a master’s in fine arts from York University and a bachelor’s in fine arts from the Escuela Nacional de Artes Plásticas de la Universidad Autónoma de México (ENAP-UNAM) in Mexico. She has participated in distinct residencies in the Banff Centre (1999) in Alberta, Canada, in Lugar a Dudas (2012) in Cali, Colombia, Proyecto Ace (2013) in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and Centro Cultural de Exploracion Contemporanea (2015) at the Tupac Artist Community Centre in Peru. Laura has received multiple awards, including the 2010 Educator Award by Galeries Ontario / Ontario Galleries. In 2013 she received funding support from Fondo Nacional para la Cultura y las Artes (FONCA) in Mexico. Her work is part of important collections including the Kiyosato Museum of Photographic Arts, Japan, the Walter Phillips Gallery at the Banff Centre, Alberta, and the Centro de la Imagen de Ciudad Mexico, Mexico. 

Laura Barron’s studio work is focused on photography, video making, and installation to reflect on the concept of borders and geography lines through images and extracts of the different landscapes that have surrounded her. She has showcased in solo exhibitions, and has also been part of collective exhibitions including Reimagining Mourning (2021) at Sur Gallery, Toronto, and Video and Performance at the Hemispheric Institute of Performance and Politics (2011) as part of e-fagia organization programming in Toronto.
