Biography

Domingo Cisneros (born 1942, Monterrey, Mexico)

Domingo Cisneros is a Mexican visual artist, poet, and educator based in Quebec and Mexico. Domingo studied architecture at the University of Nuevo León in Monterrey, Mexico, and cinematography and literature at the Universidad Autónoma de Mexico. After immigrating to Quebec in 1968, he began working as an educator at the Manitou College in La Macaza, where Cisneros developed educational concepts and philosophy of “territoire culturel” or cultural territory. These concepts became intrinsic to his studio work as a sculptor by making interventions in nature to reflect on our ecological relations with the land and history. His continuous practice expanded as a formally studied practice of sociological art at the art program of Manitou College in 1974. Domingo has been the recipient of multiple awards and recognitions. In 1990 he was the recipient of the Grand Pix de la Culture des Laurentides by the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec and in 2018 he received the doctorate honoris causa by the University of Quebec in Montreal.

Domingo Cisneros’s studio work is through the cultural territory practice; he intervenes by sculpting with the elements of the land. His work interventions have been made in the provinces of Québec, Alberta, and Yukon in Canada and later in the United States, Cuba, Norway, and France. Domingo has been showcased in Canada and internationally, and his work has been included Par la forêt (2018) at the Musée d’art contemporain des Laurentides, Queébec, and Sakahàn: International Indigenous Art (2013) at the National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa.
