Biography

Camila Salcedo (born 1996, Latin America)

Camila Salcedo is a Latin American interdisciplinary artist and curator based in Toronto. In 2018 Camila completed an interdisciplinary bachelor of fine arts at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (NSCAD University) in Halifax. They are a co-founder of Colectivo Satelital and have a collaborative duo with the visual artist denirée isabel through projects such as Navigating Connections, an online visual encyclopedia of emotions created from conversations among artists. In addition to collaborating with Karina Justo Román on Mending the Museum and with artist Laura Rojas, both have foster community projects focused on land justices, sustainability and printmaking. In 2019, Camila participated in an artist residency with Proyecto Ace Organization in Argentina. They received the valedictorian award in 2018 from NSCAD, and in 2020 they received the 2020 Emerging Digital Artists Award from EQ Bank. In 2022 they received an Artists in the Library grant from the Toronto Arts Council at the Oakwood Village Library and Arts Centre.

Camila Salcedo's studio work is primarily in textiles and digital art. Through their practice, they upcycle and recycle textiles patched together to recontextualize the object’s meaning to explore memory, culture, and political associations. Camila has showcased in the collective exhibitions: Lived in Room Objects Frozen in Time (2022) alongside collaborator, denirée isabel, at the Mary E. Black Gallery at the Centre of Craft in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Desire(d) Paths (2022) at Lakeshore Arts in Toronto with Colectivo Satelital, and the online exhibition Archival Affections (2021).
