Biography

Guillermo Trejo (Mexico)

Guillermo Trejo is a Mexican visual artist and educator based in Ottawa. Guillermo holds a bachelor of fine arts from the Escuela Nacional de Pintura, Escultura y Grabado de Ciudad Mexico, Mexico (2007) and a master of fine arts from the University of Ottawa in Ottawa (2012). Guillermo has been the recipient of multiple grants and awards including the Canada Council for the Arts production grant (2021), the Canada Council for the Arts shortlist mid-career grant (2021), and a production grant from the City of Ottawa (2020). Guillermo has been selected for multiple residencies including St. Michael Printmakers Artist Residency (2020) and the Malaspina Printmakers Artist Residency (2019). His artistic research work has been presented in speakers series including an artist talk as part of the Open Edition Exhibition (2017) at Carleton University Art Gallery in Ottawa, Master Class (2017) at SNAP Printmaking Studio in Edmonton, Alberta, and the guest artist series (2016) at Algonquin College in Ottawa, Ontario. Guillermo’s work is part of several collections including the City of Ottawa Art Collection, the Museum of Contemporary Art of Baie Saint Paul, the Benetton Art Collection, and the Stonecroft Foundation for the Arts collection.

Guillermo Trejo’s studio work is focused on printmaking, drawing, and installation, and delves into body politics and the embedded dilemmas of Eurocentric history in art practices. Guillermo has showcased in the solo exhibitions The East Coast Series (2022) and The West Coast Series (2020) both at the Studio Sixty Six Art Gallery in Ottawa, Ontario, and Instigator (2017) at SNAP Gallery in Edmonton, Alberta. His work has also been part of the collective exhibitions 2020 Additions to the City of Ottawa Art Collection (2020) at Karsh-Manson Gallery in Ottawa, Ontario, and the project Open Studio (2020) as part of the Microcosm project at Dundonald Park in a project directed by the City of Ottawa public art program.
