Biography 

Eugenio Téllez (born 1939, Santiago, Chile)  

Eugenio Téllez is a Chilean visual artist and educator based in New York City. Eugenio studied at Escuela de Bellas Artes de la Universidad de Chile (1955–1957). From 1960 to 1966 he lived in Paris and worked at the Atelier 17, founded by the British printmaker William Hayter. While in Paris he taught printmaking at the American Center for Arts and Culture. In 1967, he moved to the United States and taught painting at the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana as a visiting lecturer. In 1971, Eugenio was part of the jury for the 9th Experimental Film Festival in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and in the same year was on the jury for the International Society of Printmaking Exhibition in Montreal. From 1970 to 1994, he was a lecturer of fine arts at York University in Toronto. Eugenio Téllez has been the recipient of multiple awards including the Canadian Drawing and Printmaking Canadian Biennial (1981) celebrated in Edmonton, Alberta, the Canada Printmaking Prize (1973) ine Burnaby, British Columbia, and the first prize in printmaking from the Latin American Art Biennial in Casa de Las Americas in Habana, Cuba.  

Eugenio Téllez’s studio work is in painting and printmaking mediums to create visual abstractions of concepts, objects, and political experiences. He has exhibited in Canada, the United States, and Chile in the exhibitions Codex Pictor (1992) at the Lake Galleries in Toronto, Ética/Estética (2009) at Museo de la Solidaridad Salvador Allende in Santiago, Chile, and La sombra de Saturno (2023) at Maison de l’Amérique Latine a Paris. His work has been part of the collective exhibitions Chile Cien Años Artes Visuales: Segundo Período (1950–1973) and Entre Modernidad y Utopía both showcased in 2000 at the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes in Santiago and at the IX Bienal de Cuenca (2007) in Ecuador. Eugenio’s artwork is part of private and institutional collections including the University of Regina in Saskatchewan, the Hart House at the University of Toronto, and the Hamilton Art Gallery in Hamilton, Ontario.
