Biography

Josema Zamorano (Nayarit, Mexico)

Josema Zamorano is an interdisciplinary artist and educator. Before commencing his artistic practice, Josema pursued a degree in Electrical Engineering (ITESM, Mexico, 1992) and a Master of Sciences in Satellite Communications (U. of Surrey, United Kingdom, 1996). He has a Master of Arts in Latin American Literature (Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, 2004) and a PhD in Interdisciplinary Studies (poetry, visual arts, technology, existential philosophy) from the University of British Columbia (2012). He is a founding member of AKA Collective, a group of initially Latin-American artists struggling to find a voice in the city of Vancouver.

Josema's work extends from experimental lens-based media to poetry and performance. His artistic practice is an inquiry into different ways of representing, seeing, and constructing reality. His works question the most ubiquitous ways of knowing: the camera, the use of propositional languages, the observer-object ideations, etc. Challenging these models, he is interested in experimental-performative processes of making and interactive reception. His work has been showcased in the solo exhibitions The Place Where I am You (Armadillo Gallery, Leipzig, 2022); Encounters (Mónica Reyes Gallery, Vancouver, 2019, and Tapir Gallery, Berlin, 2019); La Mirada Transmuta lo Tocado (Página en Blando, Mexico City, 2019); Incurable Océano (Página en Blando Mexico City, 2018); Un-foldings / Des-pliegues (Sala del Mercado de la Merced, Rota-Bahía de Cádiz, Spain, 2017); Sandokai: Grasping at Things is Surely Delusion (Back Gallery Project, Vancouver, 2016). His collective exhibitions and performances include: 70% Agua and Migraciones Sonoras (Salón de la Plastica Mexicana, Mexico City, 2024); Sound Migrations (New Forms Fest, 2021,and Western Front, 2020, Vancouver); Trans-Versus for Thirstdays #3: Harbour/Heaven (VIVO Media Arts Centre, Vancouver, 2016); and Diffractions of the Local (Back Gallery Project, Vancouver, 2013).
