Biography
Claudia Cuesta (Medellín, Colombia, 1954)
Claudia Cuesta is a Colombian artist and teacher based in Sechelt, British Columbia, Canada. Claudia has a Masters of Fine Arts from the Slade School of Art, University of London (London, Ontario, 1998). She is a member of art.site, a public art and architecture project held in collaboration with urban designer Bill Baker. Their work is present in various sites in the Greater Vancouver area. In 2011, the duo was awarded the Public Award of Excellence for their installation Trees and Trail Markers in North Vancouver, BC.
While working with sculpture, painting, sound & video, installation art, and performance art, and making use of various materials (such as industrial coal, steel and copper, organic silk, and water), Claudia's work is minimalistic and poetic, constantly engaging materiality with the presence of the human body. Her work was featured in the solo exhibitions Of Being Between (curated by Ellinee Nelson, OR Gallery, Vancouver, BC, 2024); Claudia Cuesta (Bemis Centre for Contemporary Arts, Omaha, Nebraska, U.S.A., 2009); and Confessions (From a Payphone) (Vancouver Contemporary Art Gallery, 1998), among others. Cuesta's collective exhibitions include What is Welcome? (Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery, Montréal, 2023), Out of Place (Vancouver Art Gallery, 1993), Whiteness and Wounds (The Power Plant, Toronto, 1993) among many others.
