Biography

Ximena Berecochea Fernández (b. 1968, Mexico City)

Ximena Berecochea Fernández is a photo-based artist, academic, and cultural administrator based in Toronto, Canada. She holds a PhD in Hispanic Literature from the University of Toronto (2014) and a Master’s degree in Comparative Literature from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) (2006). Living in Canada since 2007, Ximena has taught in several academic institutions in Canada and Mexico and is the co-founder and co-director of the Institute for Creative Exchange (ICE), aimed at forging partnerships between cultural institutions in Mexico, Canada, and worldwide. She has also been the recipient of several grants from the Ontario Arts Council and the Mexican National Endowment for Culture and Arts.

Ximena’s photographic and academic work is centered in the merge of literary concepts and images: these hybrid languages are present in her artworks, which combine different artistic languages, media, and forms of representation. Ximena’s work has been showcased in the solo exhibitions Camino a Casa (Centro Cultural El Nigromante, San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, 2024; Rutas Theatre Festival, Factory Theatre, Toronto, 2024; Galería Flavia, Xalapa, Mexico, 2023); Feathers (LALA Contemporary, Toronto, 2023); The Stone in the Snowball ( YYZ Artists’ Outlet, Toronto, 2019); Little Red Riding Hood (Index G, Toronto, 2009); Los Otros (Galería OMR, Mexico City, Mexico, 2003); and Animal (Centro de la Imagen, Mexico City, Mexico, 2000). Collective exhibitions include Titles 8 (Casa de la Primera Imprenta de América, Mexico City, Mexico, 2023); Revisiones I. El paisaje fotográfico mexicano (Patricia Conde Gallery, Mexico City, Mexico, 2012); and Dislocation (Volkswagen Fotogalerie Hong Kong, 2004), among others.
