Biography

Dinorah Catzalco (Mexico)

Dinorah Catzalco is a Mexican artist based in the Ottawa-Gatineau region. She completed a bachelor’s degree in fine arts at the Université du Québec in Outaouais (2007). Dinorah has been an active member of the artistic community for more than 10 years, and is the exhibition coordinator at the Art-Image et Espace Odysée.

Dinorah Catzalco’s studio work is painting based. She draws inspiration from her own imagination and from Indigenous cosmologies through Mexican cultural traditions, reflecting on identity and femininity. Her works have been shown in various solo and group exhibitions across Quebec and in Ottawa and Toronto, including the Centre d’art Ville de La Sarre, the Galerie Montcalm, and Tohu: Cité des arts du cirque in Montreal. In 2018, her itinerant exhibition Tecocuahuitl: l’axe du monde was nominated to the Les Culturiades – Culture Outaouais in the category Prix du CALQ – Work of the Year in the Outaouais region. The next year Dinorah was showcased in a solo exhibition, AFFLUX, in the Salle Odyssée at the Maison de la culture de Gatineau. Later, a series of paintings was featured in a group exhibition titled Codex: la traversée du silence with financial support from the Conseil des arts de Montréal. In 2022 she showcased a selection of paintings for the group exhibition Colour of Women, curated by Tamara Toledo, at Sur Gallery in Toronto. That year she also showcased in a solo exhibition Bestiario Mexicano: un sueño de colores at the Mexican Embassy in Ottawa.
