Biography
Mirna Chacín (born 1961, Maracaibo, Venezuela)
Mirna Chacín is a Venezuelan LGBTQ2+ activist and visual artist based in Etobicoke, Canada. She holds a bachelor of arts in architecture from the University of Zulia in Maracaibo, Venezuela, where she received the Francisco Hung Gold Medal for her photographic artistic achievement in Venezuela. After immigrating to Canada she continued working as a professional photographer for community events, Dance Together, and Sur Gallery, and has built a portfolio of professional portraits of the art community. In 2017 she was the recipient of the Community Impact Award from the Mennonite New Life Centre and the Newcomer Artist Project grant from RBC Art Access Fund.
Mirna Chacín’s studio work is through digital and analogue photography and reflects on landscape and the mourning of land and people. Mirna’s work has been showcased at the collective exhibition Home Land: Bodies of Water, curated by Claudia Arana (2021), at 250 The East Mall in Toronto, Subject to Change, curated by Claudia Arana (2019), Arts Etobicoke, Ontario, and Colores de Latinoamerica (2018) by TD SunFest at The Arts Project, Toronto.
