Biography  

Claudia Chagoya (Zacatecas, Mexico) 

Claudia Chagoya is a Mexican interdisciplinary artist based in Calgary. She holds a bachelor of fine arts from Instituto Allende in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico (2017), and a master of fine arts degree from the University of Calgary (2019). Claudia has been the recipient of grants from Calgary Arts Development funds from the Canada Council for the Arts and has been shortlisted for the Alberta Artist in Residence/Arts Ambassador Program. Her work has been exhibited in Mexico and Canada as part of Artists in Residence at the Royal College of Art in London, UK, the Women’s Centre of Calgary, and Calgary Allied Arts Foundation at cSPACE King Edward. 

Claudia Chagoya’s studio work combines textiles, digital media, installations, and sculpture to explore topics related to gender violence and her socio-political background, through the use of materials rooted in Mexican culture, such as rebozos, salt, copal, and sawdust. Claudia has showcased in the solo exhibitions A Rose for Remembrance (2021) at Ledge Gallery, Arts Commons, Calgary, Novem (2021) at the artsPlace, Canmore, Alberta, In Memoriam (2021) at Gallery 505 (Calgary Allied Arts Foundation), Calgary, Novem (2019) at Nickle Galleries, Calgary, and Unweaving Foundations (2018) at Little Gallery, University of Calgary. Her work has been part of the collective exhibitions Soft Opening (2021) at The Fem Assembly, Good Neighbour, Calgary, Reimagining Mourning (2021), curated by Tamara Toledo, at Sur Gallery, Toronto, Shroud, Crown, Grey Area, Generations (2021), at Stride Gallery, Calgary, and the online exhibition Protest & Protect (2020) at the Feminist Art Museum.
