Biography
denirée isabel (Venezuela)
denirée isabel is a Venezuelan interdisciplinary visual artist based in Toronto and specializing in textiles. In 2014 she received a diploma in advanced craft and design textiles from Sheridan College. In 2016, denirée completed a bachelor of fine arts in textiles and fashion with a minor in art history from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design University. denirée has received multiple awards including JV Brown Academic Excellence in 2014, Craft Projects from the Ontario Arts Council in 2018, Visual Arts Projects from the Ontario Arts Council in 2020, Research and Creation from the Canada Council for the Arts, and Crafts Projects from the Ontario Arts Council in 2021. Denirée is one of the founders of the collective Colectivo Satelital created by a group of multidisciplinary Venezuelan artists.
denirée isabel’s studio work is focused on contextualizing her experiences in womanhood, immigration, and identity by creating spatial experiences through textiles. denirée has showcased in the solo exhibitions no hay lugar (2016) at the Anna Leonowens Gallery in Halifax, Feel/Felt (2017) in the Chives Window Gallery in Halifax, and to the strangers i love deeply (2019) at Harbourfront Centre in Toronto. Her work has been part of the collective exhibitions Soft Walls (2019) in the Museum of Contemporary Art as part of the Toronto Happening Festival, Navigating Connections (2020) online exhibition by Mount Saint Vincent Gallery in Halifax, and the Desire(d) Paths (2022) online exhibition Community Project Space, Lakeshore Arts inToronto.
