Biography
Stephanie Durán Castillo (born 1987, Lima, Perú)
Stephanie Durán Castillo is a Peruvian interdisciplinary visual and media artist based in Vancouver. She holds a Bachelor in Media Arts Animation from Emily Carr University, a Community Capacity Building Certificate from Simon Fraser University, and has professional experience as a Compositing and AFX artist in animation houses in Canada. Stephanie’s media and art training is also informed by mentorship programs and workshops from Latinx and Indigenous organizations in Canada, such as Sur Gallery (Toronto) and the Thunderbird Woman Mentorship (Winnipeg). She has received grants in experimental animation, such as the Experimental Artworks grant from the Peruvian Ministry of Culture.
Stephanie’s practice spans video, experimental animation, performance, installation, and writing. In her artworks, she explores themes of coloniality, indigeneity, mythology, undomesticated landscapes, language, and folkloric imagery. Her work has been part of the collective exhibitions Spill: Response (Belkin Gallery, Vancouver, 2019), Exist, Resist (Studio 233A, Toronto, 2016), Carnavalismo (Sur Gallery, Toronto, 2016), Skén:nen (Warren G. Flowers Art Gallery, Montréal, 2016), Colonial Pain Day (Chile, 2016), among others.
