Biography
Nahúm Flores (born 1974, Danlí, Honduras)
Nahúm Flores is a Honduran visual artist based in Toronto. Nahúm holds a bachelor of fine arts in drawing and painting from the Ontario College of Art and Design (2001). In 2023 Nahúm completed a master in fine arts from Ontario College of Art and Design. Since 2004, Nahúm has collaborated with the Toronto-based Z'otz* Collective with Latin American artists Erick Jerezano and Ilyana Martínez. The collective creates art through drawings, ceramic sculptures, and site-specific installations, and has collaborated in Canada and abroad, including residencies in Croatia and Serbia. Nahúm has been awarded grants from the Pollock–Krasner Foundation (2012), the 2014 Visual Artists: Mid-Career grant by the Ontario Arts Council, and the Toronto Arts Council.
Nahúm Flores’s studio work is mixed media fusing photographic transfers, drawings, and matter such as Plexiglas, wood panels, or tins intuitively layered on canvas to playfully reflect on the landscape and the Indigenous peoples of Honduras through characters. Nahúm’s work has been showcased in several exhibitions with the Z'otz* Collective including at Robert Langen Art Gallery and Wilfrid Laurier University Library (2023), in Waterloo, Ontario, curated by Suzanne Lake, at Visual Art Centre (2023) in Montreal, and at the Gardiner Museum (2022) in Toronto.
