Biography 

Claudia Gutierrez (British Columbia, Canada)

Claudia Gutierrez is a Latin-Canadian interdisciplinary artist and arts administrator based in Ottawa. A graduate of the Ottawa School of Art, where she specialized in Painting and Printmaking, Claudia engages in cultural work with several Ottawa-based organizations, such as the National Arts Centre, the Ottawa Arts Council, and the Ottawa Art Gallery. Claudia was awarded the SAW Prize for New Works in 2020 (Ottawa) and the Juror’s Choice Award at DesignTO in 2022 and 2024 (Toronto). Her work has been featured in news outlets such as CBC Arts, Ottawa Citizen, and BUST.

Influenced by her Mexican and Uruguayan heritage (her Uruguayan mother is a seamstress, while her paternal roots inspired her to study textile art techniques from Oaxaca, Mexico), Claudia’s textile work is abstract, methodical, and repetitive—a contrast to her artistic process, which is often chance- and improvisation-based. Claudia has also delved into public art, creating murals on an independent and commissioned basis in several locations in Ottawa. Her solo exhibitions include Liminal Monuments (Craft Ontario Gallery, Toronto, 2022) and Double Flame (Studio SixtySix, Ottawa, 2021). Collective exhibitions include Artifacts (Bulthaup Gallery, Toronto, 2024); Rooted Knots/Blended Threads (Sur Gallery, Toronto, 2024); Manila-Acapulco (City Hall Art Gallery, Ottawa, 2021), and Tethers/Scars (Gallery Annexe, Ottawa, 2020).
