Biography
Rafael Lozano-Hemmer (born 1967, Mexico)
Rafael Lozano-Hemmer is a visual artist based in Mexico and Montreal. Rafael holds a bachelor of science in physical chemistry (1989) from Concordia University in Montréal. Rafael’s research and practice have been intersecting art and technology, experimenting with the collective affect through installations. His critical work was the first work of art from a Mexican artist to be showcased at the 52nd Venice Biennale (2007). In 2016 he was appointed Compagnon des Arts et des Lettres du Québec by the Conseil des Arts et des Lettres du Québec. Rafael’s installations are part of the collections of the Public Art Fund in Washington D.C, the Tate museum in London.
Rafael Lozano-Hemmer’s studio work focuses on time-based media and installations within multiple architectural settings, creating experiential works reflecting the experiences of immigrants, vigilance, and border crossing. Rafael has showcased in the solo exhibitions A Crack in the Hourglass, An Ongoing COVID-19 Memorial (2022, ongoing) at the Brooklyn Museum, New York, and Latidos (2020) at Arte Abierto, Mexico. His work has also been part of the collective exhibitions Reimagining Mourning (2021), curated by Tamara Toledo, Sur Gallery in Toronto, and Mexico 1900-1950 (2017), curated by Agustín Artega, at the Museo Nacional de Arte, Mexico.
