Biography
Ilyana Martínez (Toronto)
Ilyana Martínez is a Mexican-Canadian visual artist based in Toronto. Ilyana holds a certificate in advanced visual studies, Florence, Italy (2003) and also has an honours bachelor of arts specializing in drawing and painting from the Ontario College of Art and Design University (2002) and a bachelor of design from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in Halifax (1991). Ilyana has received several grants and awards including the 2017 Ontario Arts Council Chalmers Arts Fellowship and the Ontario Arts Council access grant in 2015. She has been part of the Z’otz* Collective since its founding year in 2004. The collective has been the recipient of many awards and has been showcased in multiple exhibitions in Canada, the United States, and Latin America. The Z’otz* Collective received the 2013 Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant in New York.
Ilyana Martínez’s studio work is with ceramic, drawings and paintings with watercolour,gouache, ink, and pencil to create a record of the environment around her and reflect on our relationship with our surroundings. Ilyana’s work has been showcased in several exhibitions with the Z'otz* Collective including the Robert Langen Art Gallery at Wilfrid Laurier University Library (2023), in Waterloo, Ontario, curated by Suzanne Lake, at Visual Art Centre (2023) in Montreal, and at the Gardiner Museum (2022) in Toronto.
