Biography
Mariana Muñoz Gomez (Mexico)
Mariana Muñoz Gomez is a Mexican artist, writer, and curator based in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Mariana holds a bachelor’s degree in fine arts with honours from the University of Manitoba School of Art (2016) and a master of arts in cultural studies: curatorial practices from the University of Winnipeg (2020). Since 2013 they have been involved in zine collectives, as a founding member of Sappho Zine Collective (active 2013 to 2016) and of Carnation Zine (founded 2018). Their work has been featured in several publications based in Canada and Mexico. They have been the recipient of numerous grants including Explore and Create: Concept to Realization for Carnation from the Canada Council for the Arts and project grants from the Winnipeg Arts Council for window winnipeg. Distinctions include the 2018 Platform Photography Award from Winnipeg’s Platform Centre and a longlist nomination for the 2023 New Generation Photography Award at the National Gallery of Canada. Mariana was also the co-curator of window winnipeg, a 24-hour art space for site-responsive presentations of contemporary art (2018 to 2023, with Noor Bhangu, Jennifer Smith, and Sarah Nesbitt).
Mariana Muñoz Gomez’s studio work uses different mediums including artist books, writing, video, printmaking, photography, and installation to reflect on language, diaspora, displacement, and identity. They have exhibited in solo exhibitions including A volar entre rocas (To fly between stones), exhibited at Blinkers Art + Project Space in Winnipeg (2021). Mariana’s work has also been part of the collective exhibitions Proof 28 (2022) at Gallery 44 in Toronto, Gives-on-and-with: Decolonial Moves of the Transcultural, curated by Noor Bhangu (2021) at Or Gallery in Vancouver, and cause to become (2021), curated by Christina Hajjar at the School of Art Gallery, University of Manitoba.
