Biography

Soledad Fátima Muñoz (Toronto, ON, Canada)

Soledad Fátima Muñoz is an interdisciplinary artist born in Toronto, Canada, raised in Rancagua, Chile, and currently based in Toronto. She holds a MFA in Studio Art from School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC), a BFA from Emily Carr University (Vancouver, BC), and Textile Art diploma from Capilano University (Vancouver, BC). Soledad also founded and co-founded several curatorial projects such as Genero (2014), a label and audio project that focuses on the distribution of women and non-binary artists in music and sound art; CURRENT (2017), a Feminist Electronic Art Symposium; and Memoria Entretejida (Woven Memory) (2021), an online project documenting a series of site-specific installations to commemorate the lives of disappeared political detainees of Augusto Pinochet’s dictatorship in Chile. She is the recipient of several grants and awards such as The City of Vancouver Mayor’s Arts Award for Emerging Artist in Craft and Design and The Emily Carr President’s Media Award – Installation/Interactive Media.

Transiting between sound art, installation, textile art and film, Muñoz’s body of work is based on the relationships between woven structures and the embodied experiences of sound as a point of reflection in regards to the social spaces we inhabit. Her work also explores trans-border socio political and economic relationships between Canada and Chile: by unveiling histories of exploitation surrounding natural resources such as copper, she also sheds light on how these dynamics, which deeply impacted political rights in Chile in the past century, come into play in the present. Solo exhibitions include Woven Memory/Memoria Entretejida (VIVO Media Arts Center, Vancouver, 2024); the installation La Caravana de la Muerte (Sitio de Memoria La Providencia, Antofagasta, Chile, 2022); and Zona de Sacrificio (Hearth Garage, Toronto, 2021). Collective exhibitions include Hilos Conductores (Sur Gallery, Toronto, 2023); Diaspora Dialogues: Archiving the Familiar (Sur Gallery, Toronto, 2023); Feedback Loop (MKG127, Toronto, 2023); Ser Sur (Chuquimarca Art Library, Chicago, 2019); and Boundless Encounters (Hangzhou Triennial of Fiber Arts, Hangzhou, China, 2019).
