Biography
Mariana Muñoz Gomez (Mexico)
Mariana Muñoz Gomez is a Mexican artist, writer, and curator based in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Mariana holds a bachelor’s degree in fine arts with honours from the University of Manitoba School of Art (2016) and a master of arts in cultural studies: curatorial practices from the University of Winnipeg (2020). Since 2013 they have been part of the founding members of the Sappho Zine Collective, dedicated to empowering the community through collaborative art projects and independent literature. In 2018 they initiated Carnation, a self-submission and self-published digital platform dedicated to sharing creative writing and artwork. Their work has been featured in several publications based in Canada and Mexico. They have been the recipient of numerous awards including Explore and Create: Concept Realization for Carnation from the Canada Council for the Arts (2022), a project grant for arts organizations and collectives for Window Winnipeg at the Artspace, and the 2018 Platform Photography Award from Winnipeg’s Platform Centre. Mariana is also the co-curator of Window Winnipeg, a 24-hour art space for site-responsive presentations of contemporary art (with Noor Bhangu and Jennifer Smith).
Mariana Muñoz Gomez’s studio work uses different mediums including artist books, writing, video, photography, and installation to reflect on the body in the diaspora, displacement, and identity. They have showcased in the solo exhibitions a volar entre rocas (To Fly Between Stones), exhibited at the Exchange District Biz in Winnipeg, Manitoba (2022), and Blinkers Art and Project Space (2021). Mariana’s work has also been part of the collective exhibitions Proof 28 (2022) at Gallery 44 in Toronto, Gives-on-and-with: Decolonial Moves of the Transcultural, curated by Noor Bhangu (2021) at Or Gallery in Winnipeg, and Cause to Become (2021), curated by Christina Hanjjar at the School of Art, University of Manitoba.
