Biography
Juan Ortiz-Apuy (born 1980, Costa Rica)
Juan Ortiz-Apuy is a Costa Rican-Canadian visual artist based in Montreal. Juan holds a bachelor of fine arts from Concordia University (2008), a post-graduate diploma from the Glasgow School of Art in the United Kingdom (2009), and a master’s degree in fine arts from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (2011). His work has also expanded to include teaching: in 2020 he became an assistant professor in the Department of Studio Arts at Concordia University. Juan has been the recipient of multiple awards including the 2020 and 2021 Concept to Realization grant from the Canada Council for the Arts and the Research and Creation grant from the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Quebec.
Juan Ortiz-Apuy’s studio work is based on exploring different mediums such as installation, projection, and photographs to engage in the subject of human relationships with materiality and design. He has showcased in solo exhibitions including A History of an Object in 100 Years (2022) at AXENE 07 in Gatineau, Quebec, and Tropicana at the Centre National d’exposition in Jonquière, Quebec. Juan’s work has been included in the collective exhibitions Photorama 2021 and 2017 at TPW Gallery in Toronto, Art 44 (2021) at Gallery 44 Centre of Contemporary Photography, and Art Toronto (2020) as part of the Momenta Biennal booth.
