Biography
Manuel Piña-Baldoquín (born 1958, Havana, Cuba)
Manuel Piña-Baldoquín is a Cuban visual artist, educator, and social and spiritual activist based in Vancouver. Manuel holds a diploma in mechanical engineering (1983) completed in Vladimir, Russia. Manuel’s artistic career has expanded as a scholar and educator. Since 2004 he has taught at the Department of Art History and Visual Arts at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. Manuel is also an instructor at Unique Get Together Society, which is dedicated to supporting nutritional health programs, family support advocacy, and subsidies for Indigenous and marginalized communities. He has served on the board of advisors for the 2017 Live International Performance Art Biennale in Vancouver.
Manuel Piña-Baldoquín’s studio work is focused on photography, time-based media, and installations to create abstract visuals of the seascape to engage in critical conversations about political and revolution experiences. Manuel has showcased in the solo exhibitions Naufragios (2022) at the Surrey Art Gallery in Surrey, British Columbia, and After All (2020) at the Monica Reyes Gallery in Vancouver. His work has also been part of the collective exhibitions The Billboard Project (2021) at Monica Reyes Gallery in Vancouver and Fragments from Deriva (Cerro) at the 2015 Havana Biennial in Cuba.
