Biography
José Seoane (Cuba)
José Seoane is a Cuban-Canadian multidisciplinary artist based in Windsor, Ontario. José holds a diploma from the Academy of Art San Alejandro in Havana, Cuba (1982). He has taught drawing and painting courses for over 20 years at the University of Windsor in Windsor, Ontario. José has been the recipient of multiple grants and awards including the Mid-Career grant from the Ontario Arts Council (2015, 2012, 2010) and the José Maria Heredia Medal from the Universidad de Oriente in Havana, Cuba (1993).
José Seoane’s studio work is based on paintings and drawings consisting of abstracts from Western symbols, newspaper cutouts, and organic materials to reflect on the postmodern immigrant condition. José has been showcased in the solo exhibition TimeRoom (2018) at SoCA Gallery at the University of Windsor in Windsor, Ontario. His work has been part of the collective exhibitions Lingua Franca in collaboration with Sigi Torinus (2014) at EinRaum 5-7, Braunschweig, Germany, TransAMERICAS: a sign, a situation, a concept (2016) at Museum London in London, Ontario, Moving Image (2015), curated by Linda Jansma, at the Robert McLaughlin Gallery in Oshawa, Ontario, and Border Cultures III (2015) at the Art Gallery of Windsor in Windsor, Ontario.
