Melina Sevilla
Melina Sevilla is a Mexican-Canadian artist and cultural worker based in Toronto. Melina earned her BFA in Art and Art History from the University of Toronto (2013). Her work has been exhibited in Ontario and in Mexico.
Melina's sculptures, paintings and installations makes use of humour and kitsch within Mexican visual culture as a means for meditating on oppression, migration, organized crime groups across Mexico, and popular and traditional elements such as the fiesta. Her work has been featured in the collective exhibitions Carnavalismo (curated by Eduardo Amar and Alexia Bréard-Anderson, Sur Gallery, Toronto, 2016); With Mexico, From Love (Idea Exchange, Cambridge, ON, 2016); Exist, Resist (The Pendulum Project, Toronto, 2016); Out of Site (curated by Earl Miller as part of Nuit Blanche, Queen West BIA, Toronto, 2014); Roundtable Residency Showcase (The Dragon Academy, 2014); Ghost Hole V (Artscape Gibraltar Point, Toronto, 2013); Decent Exposure (Living Arts Centre, Mississauga, 2012); Home Body (VMAC Gallery, Toronto, 2012); and Fibreworks 2012 (Cambridge Galleries, ON, 2012), among others.
