Spatial Ecologies: 

Artistic responses to the pandemic across the Americas

This panel is a “shared residency” based on the Hemispheric Encounters project: Spatial Ecologies. Artistic responses to the pandemic will be discussed, with a focus on ecologies of community care within marginalized communities and the cultivation of creative strategies for Indigenous protection of lands and dialogue beyond geopolitical borders.

Coman Poon, Edgardo Moreno, & Olga Barrios

Edgardo Moreno

Edgardo Moreno is a Hamilton based composer that has been commissioned for projects in Canada, Venezuela, Colombia, Mexico, Sweden, Argentina, England and USA. He has written scores for films produced by CBC, Bravo, City TV, NFB, OMNI, Ontario Arts Council, History Channel, TVO. He has worked extensively with contemporary dance choreographers creating sound design and musical scores. He is presently working in creating video and live sound pieces that are part of his Fireflyproject. Olga Barrios

Born in Colombia, Mestiza woman Olga Barrios is choreographer, dancer, arts educator and the co-founder and co-artistic director of Vanguardia Dance Projects. Olga graduated with an MFA in Dance at York University of Toronto and has collaborated with dance, theater, musical and interdisciplinary projects in Canada, USA and Colombia. As dance teacher she has worked in Montreal, Hamilton, Kitchener, San Francisco, New Jersey and diverse cities in Colombia.  Olga’s projects foster exchange between Canada and Colombia.  olgabarrios.com

Coman Poon

Intersecting with his varied inter-arts collaborations, Coman Poon is a bilingual inclusion and intercultural advocate, community and organizational developer, decolonial and indigenous ally of Hong Kong & Toronto upbringing. With Erica Mott, he co-founded re[public] in/decency (Chicago/Toronto), a 5 year long arts-activist initiative and creative think tank that explored the transnational intersections between live art, social justice activism and arts-informed pedagogy. Since 2013, Coman has been collaborating with his spouse, architect and installationist Brian Smith, under the moniker of [ field ], a life/art collaboration which explores the interstitiality within ritual and performance. Becoming Ten Thousand Things is his collaboration with dancer Naishi Wang centred in contemplative Taoist performativity. With Diana Lopez Soto, Coman co-founded Land Embodiment Lab (LEL), which holds space for the intersection of agroecology, land stewardship and arts practices through research into/of labour. As artist and consultant, Coman chose to be no longer active on social media and has intentionally deleted his website.

Sérgio Andrade (LabCrítica/ UFRJ)

Artist, professor and researcher in dance, performance and philosophy. Since 2012, he has been a Professor at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, in the Department of Bodily Art, teaching at the Undergraduate and Graduate Dance Programs. He coordinates the Laboratório de Crítica (the "LabCrítica") at UFRJ, in which he develops several collaborative research-creation activities, training, publication, curatorship and exchange among artists, scholars and activists. Sérgio is an Ecologies Lead & Co-Investigator in the Hemispheric Encounters partnership (SSHRC/ Canada).

Yara Costa

Born in Urucurituba (AM), body-artist from the forest, creator, producer and director of the Índios.com Dance Company since 2001. Professor in the Program of Dance/University of Amazon State (UEA) since 2002, and in the Professional Master’s Program ProfArtes (UFAM/UEA). Ph.D in Communication and Semiotic (PUC-SP), Master in Artistic Performance – Dance (FMH/Lisboa) and specialist in Choreography (UFBA). Member of the Scientific Counsel of the National Association of Dance Researches (ANDA). Advisor for cultural projects of the Itacoatiara-mirim/São Gabriel da Cachoeira/AM Community.

Urucuritubense (AM), corpa artista da floresta, criou, produz e dirige a Índios.com Cia de Dança desde 2001. Atua como professora no Curso de Dança/Universidade do Estado do Amazonas (UEA) desde 2002, e no Mestrado Profissional ProfArtes (UFAM/UEA). É doutora em Comunicação e Semiótica (PUC-SP), Mestra em Performance Artística – Dança (FMH/Lisboa) e especialista em Coreografia (UFBA). Lidia Costa Larangeira

Professor in the Undergraduate Dance Program at UFRJ. Coordinator with Ruth Torralba of the Center for Research, Studies and Encounters in Dance (onucleo) – UFRJ. Dance artist, has worked with Holly Cavrell, Regina Miranda, Andrea Jabor, Lia Rodrigues, and others. Creator of the solo piece "Brinquedos para esquecer ou práticas de levante", has been artistically and academically investigating counter-choreographic practices that question and reframe dance’s colonial legacy.

Professora dos cursos de graduação em Dança da UFRJ. Coordena junto com Ruth Torralba o Núcleo de Pesquisa, Estudos e Encontros em Dança (onucleo) - UFRJ. Artista da dança, já trabalhou com Holly Cavrell, Regina Miranda, Andrea Jabor, Lia Rodrigues, entre outras. Ruth Torralba

Dance artist in the process of restoring their indigenous ancestry. Professor in the Undergraduate and Graduate Dance Programs at UFRJ. Coordinator with Ruth Torralba of the Center for Research, Studies and Encounters in Dance (onucleo) – UFRJ. Supporter and collaborator of the Indigenous Pluri-ethnic and Multicultural University Aldeia Maracanã (R.J). Currently focusing their research on questions related to the counter-colonization of dance practices, the ecologies of knowledges, the ancestry, and the healing of body and territory. 

Artista da dança em processo de retomada de sua ancestralidade indígena. Professora dos Cursos de Graduação e do Programa de Pós-Graduação em Dança da UFRJ. Thaís Chilinque

Professor in the Líquida Ação Collective and member of onucleo /UFRJ, interested in Arts of Presence, Activism and Health. Co-administrator of the ECOnceição Project, they collaborate with the implementation of more sustainable practices in the Morro da Conceição (Saúde/RJ). Develops their Master’s project through PPGDan/UFRJ with a focus on the relation between whiteness, religion and coloniality, attempting to perform other meanings for “whiteness” – beginning with their own. 

Performer do Coletivo Líquida Ação e integrante d’onucleo /UFRJ, possui grande interesse pelas Artes da Presença, Ativismo e Saúde. Sendo co-gestora do Projeto ECOnceição, colabora para implementação de práticas mais sustentáveis no Morro da Conceição (Saúde/RJ). Projetos Cavalcanti

Pablo Carvalho 

Pablo Carvalho is a Brazilian musician, educator, teacher, cultural producer and multi-artist. Born in the city of Rio de Janeiro, Pablo has been shaped by the rhythms. Percussionist and interpreter creator. His musical training has been shaped by the popular rhythms of “rodas,” “sambas,” “afoxés” and “jongos,” mixed with musical experimentation and research into popular music. Currently a member of the Frente Cavalcanti collective, Production Assistant in Lona Da Maré (RJ), and one of the creators of the “Berro” Project. Pablo is also a student of History at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. 

Pablo Carvalho é músico, educador, professor,produtor cultural e Multi-Artista brasileiro. Nascido na cidade do Rio De Janeiro, tem sua formação talhada nos ritmos. Percussionista e intérprete criador. Tem sua formação musical talhada nos ritmos populares das rodas, dos sambas, dos afoxés e dos jongos, misturada com a experimentação musical e pesquisa em música popular. Atualmente é membro do coletivo Frente Cavalcanti, Assistente de produção na Lona Da Maré (RJ),e é um dos criadores do Projeto "Berro". Taís Almeida - Projetos Cavalcanti

Born and raised in Cavalcanti (north part of RJ). Holds a BA degree in Dance from UFRJ, works with performance, dance and audiovisual. Has worked with the Contemporary Dance Company at UFRJ and other artists such as Marcela Levi, Lucía Russo, Gustavo Ciríaco, Lilibeth Cuenca, Pablo Carvalho, Giselda Fernandes, Hilton Berredo e Lia Rodrigues. Creator of a social media project of collection and creation of memories about Cavalcanti called Cavalcanti-se (@cavalcanti.se), co-director of the artistic project BERRO (@berroaltomesmo), and member of the Frente Cavalcanti (@frentecavalcanti). 

Nascida e criada em Cavalcanti (zona norte do RJ). Bacharel em Dança pela UFRJ, trabalha com performance, dança e audiovisual. Trabalhou com a Cia de Dança Contemporânea da UFRJ e outros artistas, como Marcela Levi, Lucía Russo, Gustavo Ciríaco, Lilibeth Cuenca, Pablo Carvalho, Giselda Fernandes, Hilton Berredo e Lia Rodrigues. Zip Code Memory Project

Diana Taylor 

Diana Taylor is University Professor and Professor of Performance Studies and Spanish at NYU. She is the award-winning author of multiple books, was the Founding Director of the Hemispheric Institute of Performance and Politics (1998-2020). She co-directs the Zip Code Memory Project.

Guilherme Meyer 

Guilherme E. Meyer is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of English at New York University and a student-labor organizer in GSOC-UAW Local 2110. His main areas of interest are theater and poetry 1960s-present (U.S. and Brazil), Marxism, feminism, and utopianism, and his doctoral research focuses on modes of utopianism that have emerged in Brazil since the 1960s and their continued relevance to revolutionary praxis. He is a public humanities and arts graduate fellow in the Zip Code Memory Project and a research assistant in Hemispheric Encounters.
