Biography
Ixchel Suarez (born 1966, Mexico)
Ixchel Suarez is a Mexican textile fabric artist based in Warkworth, Northumberland, Ontario. Ixchel holds a Master’s Degree in Museum Studies (Iberoamericana University, Mexico City), a BA in Graphic Design & Art History (Anahuac University, Mexico City), and Post-Graduate Studies in Contemporary Textiles in Łódź, Poland. She is the Founder and Director of the Oakville Arts Studio and the not-for-profit Canadian Tapestry and Texture Centre, and has given lectures, workshops and artist talks in centres such as the Textile Museum of Canada, the Textile Museum of Oaxaca, Mexico, and at several handweavers and spinners guilds across Ontario. Her work has been contemplated by grants from the Canada Council for the Arts and the Ontario Arts Council. She is also the recipient of awards such as the 2021 Award of Excellence from Lausanne to Beijing Fibre Art Biennale and the 2010 Visual Arts Category of the Oakville Arts Council.
Influenced by her Mexican cultural identity and her experience as an immigrant in Canada, Suarez’s practice within textile art integrates Abstract Expressionism with the traditional craft of tapestry. She explores themes related to nature’s transitions, climate change, and the transient nature of existence. Ixchel’s work has been showcased in solo exhibitions such as Tempus Fugit (Art Gallery of Northumberland, Sep-Nov 2024); she has also been part of several collective exhibitions, such as Rooted Knots/Blended Threads (Sur Gallery, Spring 2024), Woven By Hand: Contemporary Canadian Tapestries (Almonte Textile Museum, 2024), and the Triennial of Contemporary Textile Art in Łódź (Textile Museum of Kamienna Gora, Poland, 2013). Ixchel also exhibited in the World of Threads festival, a biennial showcase of local, national and international contemporary fibre and textile art based in Oakville, Ontario, on several occasions.
