Biography
Alex Usquiano (Colombia)
Alex Usquiano is a Colombian digital media visual artist based in Toronto. Alex has over 15 years of experience working in the entertainment industry, creating photographs, videos, and murals. In 2011, Alex co-founded Muse Arts, an artist-run community organization located in Toronto with a mission to support the community through visual arts programming and open discussions about social justice. With Paola Gomez, Muse Arts have expanded and co-founded Sick Muse Arts Projects, working on community art projects that engage children and youth in art and literature. In 2015, Alex received a grant from the RBC Art Access Fund.
Alex Usquiano’s studio work is with photographs and film to create portraits in surreal and imaginative settings. Alex’s work has been showcased in the solo exhibitions The Observation Machine (2018) at the North York Art Gallery in Toronto and Daydreaming (2016) at the Cedar Ridge Gallery in Toronto. His work has also been part of the collective exhibitions On the Fence (2022), curated by Phil Sutherland, Leah Denbok, and Adam Weitner, as part of the Scotiabank Contact Photography Festival and Panamerican Colours (2020), curated by Claudia Montoya at Gallery 1313 in Toronto.
