Biography
Osvaldo Yero (born 1969, Cuba)
Osvaldo Yero is a Cuban multidisciplinary artist based in Vancouver. Osvaldo completed his studies in sculpture and drawing at the Instituto Superior de Arte (ISA) in Havana, Cuba. His studio works are instructed by sculpture and installation, and his artistic practice is politically and socially charged, contending with issues of national identity and playing with the boundaries of kitsch and fine art. In 2019, Osvaldo and the artist Rebeca Belmore were commissioned to create a public sculpture entitled Adoopoowiningemuh Waabandizo for the Great Hall at Hart House at the University of Toronto. In the same year, the city of Edmonton acquired the sculpture Wild Rose for its public art collection.
Osvaldo Yero’s work has been showcased in the solo exhibitions Osvaldo Yero: Landmark (2022) at Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, and Passage (2010), curated by Charo Neville at Access Gallery in Vancouver. His work has also been part of the collective exhibitions Contemporary Art from Cuba: Irony and Survival on the Utopian Island (2000–2001), curated by Marylin Zeitlin at Arizona State University and also displayed at the University of South Florida (2001) and the University Art Museum at the University of California Santa Barbara (2000).
