Biography
Gabriela García Luna (born 1963, Mexico)
Gabriela García Luna is a Mexican visual artist based in Saskatchewan, Canada. Gabriela holds a bachelor’s degree in graphic design and communication from the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana de Mexico (1986). In 2020 she completed a master of fine arts at the University of Saskatchewan. Her professional career began in Mexico as a photography assistant to Manuel Alvarez Bravo in 1986, after which she continued working as a freelance graphic designer and photographer for an independent business until 1999, when she dedicated herself to travel photography. From 2006 to 2005, she was the photographer for the documentary film about and archives of the Mexican cinematographer Gabriel Figueroa. Since 2010 Gabriela has worked with museum institutions and archives photographing their collections and archives. She has been the recipient of multiple awards including Independent Artists grants in 2018, 2017, and 2010 from the Saskatchewan Arts Board and the Visual Arts Residency grant at the Banff Centre from the National Foundation for Culture and the Arts at the Banff Centre (2010). She has also been an artist in residence at Kashi Art Gallery in the city of Kochi in Kerala, India (2015). Gabriela’s work has been collected in international institutions including the Global Affairs Canada collection, the Saskatchewan Art Board collection, and the collection of the Government of the State of Querétaro in Mexico.
Gabriela García Luna’s studio work is assembling photo documentaries and photo abstractions of imaginary spaces and places, exposing the inherent capabilities of the photographic medium. Her work has been exhibited in solo exhibitions including Lucky Seven (2020) at Slate Fine Art Gallery in Regina, Saskatchewan, Artist Focus - Gabriela García-Luna (2019) at Slate Fine Art Gallery, and Ponds (2018) at Slate Fine Art Gallery, Saskatchewan. Additionally, she has participated in collective exhibitions Community, Connections, and __________., curated by Biofeed Collective, in Saskatchewan, Garden of Skin (2018) at Angus-Hughes Gallery in London, United Kingdom, and Anthology (2018) at Fifth Parallel Gallery at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan
