ARCHIVO: ACTIVATING LATIN AMERICAN ART ARCHIVES IN CANADA
11:30-1pm
Since 2023, Sur Gallery has hosted the ARCHIVO project, which digitally documents the contributions and trajectories of Latin American,Latin-Caribbean, and Latinx artists in Canada. ARCHIVO was born out of the needto archive a diaspora lacking resources, platforms, and forms of representation. Its approach to archiving has been grassroots-oriented and community-involved, and situates Latin American art and its artists into Canadian art history with its evolving role within the arts landscape.
Two years after ARCHIVO’s launch, we ask: how can we further activate this project and involve communities? What possibilities for research become available? What are the challenges and opportunities of working with archives that cross borders, languages, and hemispheres? This panel gathers researchers, archivists, and artists offering an opportunity to imagine potential futures for this project.
